NTSB says Fort Worth crews failed to prevent fatal 2021 crash

FORT WORTH, TX – The National Transportation Safety Board concluded an investigation of a 2021 crash that killed six people on I-35W in Fort Worth, reports Click 2 Houston.

The NTSB announced on Thursday their findings that the North Tarrant Express Mobility Partners Segment 3 failed to take appropriate actions to make the roadway safe for motorists prior to the 130-car pileup on the interstate.

The accident happened on February 21, 2021, around 6 a.m. in the southbound toll lanes of I-35W near downtown Fort Worth.

The investigation indicates that the pileup started after a car hit a concrete barrier on the right side of a toll lane. Additional vehicles then began to slide and crash on the icy roadway, including a large truck. The pileup killed six people and injured dozens.

The NTSB says that crews with the North Tarrant Express Mobility Partners Segment 3 did not salt the portion of the interstate where the crash occurred on the morning of the accident. Instead, they pretreated the southbound lanes two days prior to the accident, which was not sufficient to prevent ice accumulation on the roadway.

A spokesperson for the North Tarrant Express Mobility Partners Segment 3 defended the measures taken by the company to make the roadways safe on February 21st.
