Crash caused by DUI driver at Rugged and Ledbetter injures 6 children

DALLAS, TX – A two-vehicle crash caused by an alleged intoxicated driver injured six children Saturday in southwest Dallas, reports Fox 4 KDFW.

The accident happened at night at the intersection of Rugged Drive and West Ledbetter Road, which is just northeast of Dallas Executive Airport-RBD.

Police say that a speeding 2018 Chevy Malibu carrying two people struck a 2016 GMC Acadia carrying eight people as the latter vehicle was turning from Rugged onto Ledbetter.

Two children riding in the back of the GMC, a four-year old boy and a five-year-old boy, both went to the hospital with serious injuries. The four-year-old was not properly restrained and was thrown from the SUV upon impact.

Medics also transported three additional children and a teen from the SUV to the hospital with non-critical injuries.

The driver and passenger in the Chevy fled the scene of the accident. Police located them soon after and arrested the driver, identified as 20-year-old Jose Castro. Castro faces charges that include intoxication assault and collision causing serious bodily injury.

The investigation is ongoing.
