3-vehicle crash on FM 509 near FM 800 kills 1, injures 2

SAN BENITO, TX – An elderly woman died, and two others sustained injuries last Friday in a multi-vehicle accident just south of Harlingen, reports Valley Central 4.

The crash happened shortly before 1:30 p.m. on FM 509 south of FM 800 in the city of San Benito. This is just north of Las Palomas Wildlife Management Area.

Police say the collision involved a southbound 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe, a southbound semi, and a northbound 2021 Hyundai Kona. The driver of the Chevy was speeding when they attempted to pass the semi and struck the trailer’s left rear. The Chevy then travelled into the northbound lane and hit the Hyundai.

Medics transported the driver of the Hyundai to an area hospital, where she died from injuries sustained in the accident. Authorities identified her as 77-year-old Oralia Garza.

A passenger from the Hyundai and the driver of the Chevy also went to the hospital. They sustained serious injuries in the crash.

A full investigation is underway.
