Jaredi Mpaweingabire and 5 others killed in US-87 wreck

HARTLEY CO, TX – Two adults and four children died very early Wednesday in a two-vehicle collision along the highway in east-central Hartley County, reports everythingLubbock.

The incident occurred shortly before 12:30 a.m. on US-87 just east Hartley. This is about 70 miles northwest of Amarillo.

Police say that a westbound Honda Pilot carrying six people entered the eastbound side of US-87 and crashed head-on with an eastbound 2016 Freightliner M2 box truck. The impact caused the Honda to catch fire.

All six occupants of the SUV died at the scene, including a two-year-old boy, a four-year-old girl, a five-year-old boy, and a six-year-old girl. Authorities identified the two adult victims as Jaredi Mpaweingabire, 31, and Mapendo Olga, 28.

Medics transported the truck driver to an area hospital with non-critical injuries.

A full investigation is underway.
