Maria Pineda, 60, and 4 others killed in Zavala Co. crash
ZAVALA CO., TX – A southwest Texas crash involving a semi and three passenger vehicles killed five people during a winter storm on Tuesday, reports The New York Times.
The accident happened shortly after 12:30 a.m. on US-57 along the bridge over the Nueces River, just east of La Pryor in north-central Zavala County.
Police say that two vans and a pickup truck stopped on the bridge after an initial crash caused by icy road conditions. A westbound 18-wheeler the struck the three vehicles, killing one of the van drivers, three van passengers, and the driver of the pickup truck.
Authorities identified the victims as 60-year-old Maria Pineda, 43-year-old Diana Lopez, 60-year-old Estanislao Jaimes, 63-year-old Pedro Urquiza, and 48-year-old Jose Artemio Rodriguez.
Medics transported seven additional victims to an area hospital with unknown injuries.
