Michael Rider killed in semi crash, chemical spill on FM 1725
SAN JACINTO CO., TX – A 54-year-old truck driver sustained fatal injuries Friday in a crash involving a HAZMAT semi in west-central San Jacinto County, reports msn.
The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. along FM 1725 between Gale Haven Road and FM 3081 near Waverly. This is about an hour north of Houston.
Police say that for unknown reasons, the driver of an 18-wheeler hauling a tanker full of sulfur dioxide crashed along the highway. The impact cracked the tanker and caused the semi to roll on its side, leaking sulfur dioxide.
The truck driver, identified as Micheal Rider from Buna, died at the scene.
Medics treated 29 students on a nearby school bus for symptoms associated with exposure to fumes from the sulfur dioxide.
Additionally, officials evacuated area homes, closed FM-1725 in the area of the crash, and opened a shelter in a nearby city for evacuees.
Residents were allowed home on Saturday, but roadways remained closed while emergency teams worked to clear the scene.
A full investigation is underway.
