Jalen Bryce Herndon, 25, dies after hit-and-run on I-35 in San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO, TX – A 25-year-old man was fatally struck by a vehicle early last Wednesday morning, February 12, on Interstate 35 near downtown San Antonio, reports KSAT.
The incident took place on the south lower level of the highway at Laredo Street, in the city’s Southtown area. By 4:39 a.m., all main lanes on the level were shut down, forcing motorists to divert to the upper levels.
According to a preliminary investigation, the victim, identified as 25-year-old Jalen Bryce Herndon, was running in a northeast direction across the southbound highway. At one point, he was hit by a red 2018 Freightliner.
First responders arrived on the scene to find the male pedestrian laying in the roadway, and he was pronounced deceased shortly after. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has since ruled that Herndon died as a result of blunt force injuries sustained in the accident.
While the tractor-trailer continued away from the scene, it was later located miles away. Officials said they detained and arrested the driver, a 64-year-old man, who is being investigated for collision involving death. At this time, police have ruled out impairment as a factor.
