Wendell Voyles, 60, killed in Mesquite hit-and-run on US-80

MEQUITE, TX – A Sunnyvale cyclist sustained fatal injuries Tuesday when a vehicle struck him along the highway on the northeast side of Mesquite, reports Bombshellcritics.

The accident happened shortly before 6 a.m. along the north frontage road for US-80, between North Belt Line Road and Planters Road. This portion of the highway runs through Samuell Farm Park.

Police say that the driver of a northbound 1998 Chevrolet C10 pickup, identified as 49-year-old Luis Quezada, left the scene after hitting the cyclist. Authorities arrested Quezada when he later returned to the scene of the accident.

The victim, identified as 60-year old Wendell Voyles, succumbed to his injuries after transport to an area hospital.

Quezada faces a felony charge of collision involving a fatality. It’s not yet clear why the driver chose to flee the scene initially without stopping to render aid.

A full investigation is underway.
