Mark Alvarez, John Escamilla killed in crash with drunk driver
HIDALGO CO., TX – A man and a child sustained fatal injuries Monday in a multi-vehicle accident caused by an alleged drunk driver in central Hidalgo County, reports Valley Central.
The incident occurred shortly after 2:30 a.m. on US-281 between Edinburg and FM 1017. This is about two hours southwest of Corpus Christi.
Police say that a northbound Chevy Malibu entered the southbound side of US-281 and collided head-on with a southbound black Hyundai Tucson. A southbound Freightliner semi-truck then crashed into the Hyundai Tucson.
Just prior to this collision, the driver of a southbound white Chevrolet Colorado left the roadway to avoid impacting with the Malibu. The Colorado overturned, injuring the driver and a child passenger. Both occupants went to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Hyundai, identified as 32-year-old Mark Anthony Alvarez, died at the scene of the wreck. Additionally, Alvarez’s 4-year-old son, identified as John Andrew Escamilla, died after transport to an area hospital. Authorities say the child was not properly restrained at the time of the crash.
The wrong-way driver sustained critical injuries in the accident. Authorities found beer cans in the cab of the Malibu and say the driver showed signs of intoxication. Toxicology reports are still pending.
A full investigation is underway.
