Chloe Rios, Ja Houston, Zaldivar Espinosa killed in Bastrop crash

BASTROP, TX – Three people died Saturday in a wrong-way collision along the highway on the eastern outskirts of Bastrop, reports KVUE.

The accident happened sometime in the morning along TX-71 near Pine Hill Loop. This is west of Texas Aces Athletics and southeast of Bastrop State Park.

Police say that a westbound 2022 Tesla entered the eastbound side of TX-71 and crashed head-on into an eastbound 2010 Nissan Sentra.

The wrong-way driver, who was unrestrained at the time of the crash, died after transport to an area hospital. Authorities identified him as 33-year-old Zaldivar Espinosa of Austin.

Two people from the Nissan succumbed to their injuries at the scene of the collision. They’ve been identified as Ja Michael Houston, 20, and Chloe Rios, 18. Both victims were from Smithville, which is 13 miles southeast of Bastrop.

Motorists likely faced significant delays Saturday morning along TX-71 east of Bastrop while emergency crews worked at the scene of the crash.

A full investigation is underway.
