2-vehicle collision on US-69 in Alto kills Yvette McVey, 54
ALTO, TX – A woman died, and two people sustained injuries in a Memorial Day weekend crash caused by a drunk driver in south-central Cherokee County, reports KLTV 7.
The collision occurred shortly before 11 p.m. at the intersection of US-69 and FM 1911 on the south side of Alto. This is about 26 miles northwest of Nacogdoches.
Authorities say that a 21-year-old drunk driver struck another vehicle after failing to heed a stop sign at the intersection.
Medics transported the driver and one passenger from the second vehicle to an area hospital with unknown injuries.
A second passenger succumbed to her injuries. Officials identified her as 54-year-old Yvette Nicole McVey of Austin.
Police arrested the driver of the first vehicle, identified as Samuel Lee Schlemmer of Alto, on multiple charges, including intoxication manslaughter, intoxication assault, and failure to stop at a stop sign.
A full investigation is underway.
