Laredo crash claims Jose Rodriguez-Covarrubias, Roberto Zavala
LAREDO, TX – One person died, and a two others sustained injuries in a wrong-way crash that happened over the Memorial Day weekend in Laredo, reports LMTonline.
Both vehicles were traveling along TX-359 between North Smith Avenue and US-83 on the morning of Saturday, May 24th, when the collision occurred.
Police say that for unknown reasons, an eastbound Ford Mustang entered the westbound side of the highway and crashed head-on into a westbound Chevy Silverado carrying two people.
The force of the collision caused the Mustang to ignite. The 19-year-old driver, identified as Jose Alfredo Rodriguez-Covarrubias, required transport by air ambulance.
Medics also transported the occupants of the pickup truck to a San Antonio hospital. The passenger, identified as 81-year-old Roberto Zavala succumbed to his injuries after transport.
It’s not yet clear if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.
A full investigation is underway.
