Baby killed in collision caused by drunk driver at Corona and Cook

HOUSTON, TX – An infant died, and a man was arrested Wednesday following a major collision at a busy intersection in southwest Houston, reports KHOU 11.

Around 6:30 p.m. emergency crews responded to an ejection crash at the intersection of Cook Road and Corona Lane, which is just east of Hackberry Park and southwest of Alief Community Park.

Police say that a southbound car was travelling at a high rate of speed when it hit another car that had turned onto Cook from Corona.

The impact of the collision ejected an 11-month-old baby boy from the backseat of the second vehicle. The infant succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident.

Medics transported the baby’s mother, who was driving the car at the time of the crash, to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The southbound driver, identified as 19-year-old Isiah Martinez, fled the scene of the collision. Authorities soon located and arrested Martinez on charges that include hit-and-run and DUI.

A full investigation is underway.
