Mass-casualty collision on I-20 near Hiram Rd kills 5, injures 1
KAUFMAN CO., TX – A truck driver fell asleep while driving Saturday, causing a multi-vehicle collision along the interstate in northeastern Kaufman County.
According to CBS News, the chain-reaction crash happened shortly after 2:30 p.m. on I-20 near Hiram Road. This is just southeast of Terrell and about 38 miles southeast of Dallas.
Police say that the 27-year-old driver of an 18-wheeler rear-ended a Ford F-150 after falling asleep behind the wheel. The semi went on to hit two other 18-wheelers, one of which hit three additional passenger vehicles.
Medics airlifted a passenger from the Ford to an area hospital with critical injuries.
Another four people from the Ford succumbed to their injuries at the scene of the accident as did the driver of the Jeep. Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims.
It’s unclear if anyone else sustained injuries in the crash.
Officials arrested the truck driver who fell asleep on multiple manslaughter charges. He has since been identified as Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni.
The investigation is ongoing.
