Carlos Pineda arrested after fatal DUI crash in NE Houston

HOUSTON, TX – A 20-year-old man faces charges after causing a wrong-way collision that claimed the life of a five-year-old girl on Friday in Harris County, reports KHOU 11.

The accident occurred around 8:30 p.m. along East Mount Houston Road between Quiet Lane and Mesa Drive in northeast Houston. This is east of I-69 and south of the Golf Club of Houston.

Police say that a westbound Nissan SUV driven by Carlos Garcia Pineda entered the eastbound side of the roadway and crashed head on into an eastbound Cadillac sedan carrying a woman and her daughter.

An unrestrained child in the backseat of the sedan sustained fatal injuries in the collision.

Medics transported both the driver of the sedan and the wrong-way driver to area hospitals with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities found open containers of alcohol in the SUV, and Pineda showed signs of intoxication at the scene. Police arrested Pineda on a charge of intoxication manslaughter.

A full investigation is underway.
