Katherine & Zachary Barton’s lives claimed in five-vehicle crash in Hillsboro 

HILLSBORO, TX – A 39-year-old man and woman lost their lives in a five-vehicle crash in Hillsboro on Saturday, WFAA said. 

The incident happened at 8:30 p.m. on State Highway 171 and County Road 4223. Preliminary details from the Texas Department of Public Safety reveal that a driver of a Ford Fiesta, driving north, had passed a pickup truck before going into the right lane and crashing into equipment towed by a farm tractor in the northbound lane. 

The impact of that initial collision caused the farm equipment to detach and fall onto the highway. Moments later, a driver of a Chevrolet Traverse and a Ford F-150 pickup truck crashed into the farm equipment. 

The Ford occupants, 39-year-old Katherine and Zachary Barton, and a 12-year-old boy with them, exited their pickup truck and were struck by a fifth vehicle. 

EMS crews took the Bartons, from Arlington, the 12-year-old boy, and the Ford Fiesta driver to a hospital. 

Subsequently, the Bartons died from their injuries, while the 12-year-old boy and Ford Fiesta driver remain in critical condition. 

While the investigation is in the early stages, DPS suspects that impairment could have been a contributing factor in the collision.
