New York man charged after Mesquite truck-SUV crash that killed Lisa Maldonado
MESQUITE, TX – A man from New York was charged with manslaughter in connection with a truck-SUV crash in Mesquite that killed a woman.
WFAA said that the crash happened on Friday on Interstate 30 West approaching Interstate 635 North. Mesquite police said that according to recovered dash camera footage, the New York man, identified as 39-year-old Khasan Begbaev, backed his truck down the interstate before being struck by an SUV.
The SUV became wedged underneath the trailer and was dragged a short distance, the arrest affidavit reveals.
The SUV driver, identified as Lisa Maldonado, was rushed to a hospital where she died from her injuries as a result.
Begbaev originally told police that his dash camera footage was not working, but a police investigator checked and verified that it was working.
Begbaev gave a sworn statement to police saying that he approached an exit, slowed down, and activated his hazard lights. He claimed he saw another vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, and said it crashed into the back of his truck as he was preparing to turn right. His statement and his dash camera footage did not match, and his footage, in fact, revealed that he entered the I-635 North ramp in the left lane and backed up, violating New York and Texas safety laws.
Begbaev also showed no signs of impairment and spoke Uzbek with police, but had some understanding of the English language and was able to communicate with officers. He also told officers he stopped in Mount Pleasant to rest, had driven for two hours, and said he was headed to Austin.
Begbaev was arrested and has a bond set at $50,000.
