Drunk driver strikes, injures cyclists on Airfield Dr near airport

IRVING, TX – Two cyclists sustained injuries Monday evening when a drunk driver struck them near the airport in Irving, reports Fox 4 KDFW.

The crash occurred around 6 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of North Airfield Drive near South Freeport Parkway, which is on the northeast side of Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

Police say the 31-year-old driver of a white Subaru SUV crashed into a group of cyclists, causing two of them to fall from their bikes. The driver then ran over a 69-year-old male cyclist, identified as Tom Geppert.

Medics transported Geppert to the hospital with a concussion, a leg injury, and a broken rib. The female cyclist sustained non-critical injuries and did not require hospitalization.

The driver, identified as Benjamin Hylander, fled the scene of the collision. Police apprehended and arrested Hylander a short time later. He faces charges of DUI and aggravated assault.
