Truck vs. SUV crash on US-285 near Pecos kills 1, injures 1

REEVES CO., TX – A 56-year-old man died, and a truck driver was hurt Saturday along the highway in north Reeves County, reports NewsWest 9.

The two-vehicle collision occurred in the morning along US-285 near mile maker 342. This is northwest of Pecos near the city of Orla.

Police say that for unknown reasons, the driver of a southbound 2024 International truck lost control and left the roadway. When he returned to the highway, the driver overcorrected and entered the northbound lanes of traffic, colliding head-on with a northbound Chevrolet Equinox. The crash impact caused the SUV to catch fire.

The driver of the Chevy died at the scene of the accident. Authorities identified him as Mahmoud M. Abbad of Pecos.

Medics transported the truck driver, identified as 41-year-old Benjamin Raul Hernandez, to an area hospital with non-critical injuries.

A full investigation is underway.
