Wrong-way crash on FM 1616 in Athens kills 2 adults, 2 children

ATHENS, TX – Two adults and two children died earlier this month in a wrong-way collision along a major roadway in central Henderson County, reports KLTV 7.

Emergency teams reported to FM 1616 in the city of Athens just before 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 6th. Athens is about 73 miles southeast of Dallas.

Police say that for unknown reasons, the driver of an eastbound 1993 Ford Ranger carrying one adult and two children entered the westbound side of FM 1616 and crashed head-on into a westbound Nissan Armada.

The collision killed the driver of the Nissan, identified as 57-year-old Merri Kelly of Murchison.

The 29-year-old driver of the Ford and his two unrestrained sons, an 8-year-old and an 11-year-old, also died in the crash.

Authorities identified the wrong-way driver as Michael Bone.

A full investigation is underway.
