2 killed, 1 arrested in wrong-way DUI crash on I-37 at MM 53
LIVE OAK CO., TX – Two adults died Monday in a wrong-way crash caused by a drunk driver along the interstate in southeast Live Oak County, reports KRIS 6 News.
The accident happened just before 7:30 p.m. on I-37 near mile marker 53. This is between Swinney Switch and George West, about 60 miles northwest of Corpus Christi.
Police say that a southbound 2016 Dodge Ram 2500 entered the northbound side of the interstate and collided head-on with a northbound Volkswagen Atlas. The impact caused the Volkswagen to ignite, and both occupants became entrapped and died.
Authorities identified the victims as 45-year-old Joseph Thompson and 44-year-old Jessica Thompson.
According to police, the wrong-way driver, identified as 32-year-old Junior Velasquez, was intoxicated at the time of the accident. Police arrested him on two counts of intoxication manslaughter.
The investigation is ongoing.
