Helen Clanan, 90, claimed in NE El Paso pedestrian accident

EL PASO, TX – An SUV struck and fatally injured an elderly woman early last week in the crosswalk of a Castner Heights roadway, reports KFOX 14.

The auto-pedestrian crash occurred around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20th, along Stahala Drive between Rutherford Drive and SM Mellnik Drive, which is just west of Todd Ware Park and JM Whitaker Elementary School in northeast El Paso.

Police say that Helen Clanan was crossing from Stahala Drive when a 2009 GMC Sierra SUV hit her. The driver of the SUV was completing a left turn from Rutherford onto Stahala when they struck the pedestrian.

Clanan died after transport to an area hospital.

Authorities haven’t commented on the condition of the driver, but no charges have been filed thus far.

Traffic along Stahala Drive in the area of the crash was likely slowed last Tuesday night while crews worked at the scene.

A full investigation is underway.
