Deputy Andrew Cavazos, 1 other hurt in Lubbock collision

LUBBOCK, TX – Two Lubbock County deputies sustained injuries Monday while helping a stranded motorist along the interstate, reports everythingLubbock.

The incident happened shortly before 10 a.m. on the southbound side of I-27, or US-87, near 98th Street in south-central Lubbock.

Police say the LCSO deputies had parked their patrol vehicle along the interstate as a barrier to traffic while they helped the motorist to change a tire. During this time, an 18-wheeler rear-ended the patrol vehicle.

Both deputies and the stranded motorist sustained significant injuries and were transported to area hospitals.

There’s no word yet regarding the condition of the truck driver at the time of the accident. Officials say the driver was likely distracted when the crash occurred.

Officials closed I-27 in the area of the crash while emergency crews rescued one of the deputies, who had fallen partially from the overpass, and attended to all three victims.

A full investigation is underway.
