Slidell man killed in 10-car crash on I-10 near Wallisville

CHAMBERS CO., TX – An elderly man sustained fatal injuries Thursday morning in a chain-reaction crash along the interstate in north-central Chambers County.

According to KHOU 11, the ten-vehicle collision occurred shortly after 8 a.m. on I-10 near TX-61 in the Wallisville area between Houston and Beaumont.

Police say that a tanker truck rear-ended a vehicle on the interstate. This initial collision caused the tanker to roll and spill oil across the interstate. The crash also initiated several subsequent collisions involving eight additional vehicles.

One person, a 75-year-old man from Slidell, died in the accident. His name has not yet been released to the public.

Medics transported two additional people to the hospital with critical injuries. While seven others were hurt, it’s unclear if they required hospitalization. The 48-year-old driver of the tanker truck did not sustain injuries in the crash.

Officials closed both sides of the interstate while crews attended to the victims, gathered evidence, and worked to clear the scene. All lanes re-opened around twelve hours later.

The investigation is ongoing.
