DUI driver causes wrong-way crash on US-80 in Sunnyvale, killing 1

SUNNYVALE, TX – A 34-year-old Forney man died Sunday in a head-on collision along the highway in east-central Dallas County, reports Fox 4 KDFW.

Emergency teams reported to the area of US-80 and Lawson Road in Sunnyvale around 2 a.m. This is about 16 miles east of Dallas.

Police say that a westbound pickup truck entered the eastbound side of US-80 and collided head-on with an eastbound Dodge Challenger.

The driver of the Challenger died at the scene. Authorities identified him as Jonathan D. Washington. They say Washington was known in his community for coaching Mesquite youth football and working at the hospital.

Officials arrested the wrong-way driver, identified as 22-year-old Edgar Cortez, on charges that include DUI and intoxication manslaughter.

A full investigation is underway.
