Ashley Nelson claimed in bike crash on TX-6 in SW Houston

HOUSTON, TX – A 37-year-old woman sustained fatal injuries Sunday when a vehicle struck her bicycle along the highway near the Mission Bend neighborhood, reports Click 2 Houston.

Shortly before 4:30 a.m., emergency teams received word of a major accident at the intersection of TX-6 and Empanada Drive, which is just south of Pavillion Village and west of Alief Taylor High School.

Police say that a northbound red sedan struck the eastbound cyclist, who was attempting to cross the highway outside of a designated crosswalk or pedestrian lane.

The bicyclist, identified as Ashley Mae Nelson, died at the scene.

The driver of the red sedan, later identified as 28-year-old Shantia Howard, left the scene of the wreck without stopping to render aid and speak with officials. Authorities later found and arrested Howard for failure stop.

A full investigation is underway.
