Sgt. Manuel Edwards killed in cycling crash on Gaston Rd

KATY, TX – A Harris County police sergeant sustained fatal injuries Tuesday when a vehicle struck his bicycle along a major roadway in southwest Katy, reports KHOU 11.

The off-duty collision occurred shortly after 8 a.m. on the northbound side Gaston Road approaching Katy Flewellen Road, which is just south of Woodcreek Junior High School in the Grayson Lakes area.

Police say that the driver of a Uhaul was likely intoxicated when he struck Sargeant Manuel Edwards, 55, on his bike on Gaston Road.

Officials say the driver, since identified as 63-year-old Earlie Gibbs, did not stop to render aid and to speak with police.

Sargeant Edwards succumbed to his injuries after air transport to an area hospital.

Officials charged Gibbs for intoxication manslaughter and hit-and-run.

The investigation is ongoing.
