Fatality reported in bicycle hit-and-run at I-45 SB, Spur 5
HOUSTON, TX – A male cyclist died early Friday morning when a vehicle struck him along the freeway in Houston’s Greater Third Ward, reports KHOU 11.
Shortly after 3 a.m., emergency teams reported to a hit-and-run collision along the southbound side of the Gulf Freeway, or I-45, at Spur 5. This is just north of the University of Houston.
Police say the bicyclist was riding in a southbound lane of travel on the freeway when an unidentified vehicle hit him without stopping to render aid and to speak with authorities.
The cyclist succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His name has not yet been released to the public.
Officials closed the southbound side of the Gulf Freeway in the area of the accident while crews gathered evidence and worked at the scene.
Houston Police are still working to identify a suspect in the crash.
A full investigation is underway.
