Abel Zamudio Gamboa killed in Dallas Co. hit-and-run collision
DALLAS COUNTY, TX – A 39-year-old man identified as Abel Zamudio Gamboa lost his life in a hit-and-run collision that happened on Wednesday.
The incident occurred around midnight. The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office told NBCDFW that Zamudio Gamboa was pulled over on the Interstate 20 shoulder and was changing a tire on his semi-truck when he was struck by a white or light-colored Chevy Express or GMC Savana van.
The driver, who struck Zamudio Gamboa, fled the scene, and Zamudio Gamboa, himself, died from his injuries.
The driver who fled the scene was later identified as 28-year-old Elana Kaye Peronis.
Peronis told her employer she thought she struck a dog.
Peronis’ work van had damage to its right side, which matched the description of damage as described by the sheriff’s office. Her employer reported the damage to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office’s Vehicle Crimes Unit followed up on the report and obtained an arrest warrant for Peronis.
Deputies arrested Peronis and booked her without incident into the Dallas County Jail.
Peronis remains in custody and is charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
At this time, a judge has not set a bond amount for Peronis, and it’s unclear if she enlisted legal representation.
