Matteo Hernandez, 8, claimed in crash on TX-114 in Rhome

RHOME, TX – A second grader died last Thursday in a multi-vehicle crash along the highway in southeast Wise County, reports The Messenger.

The fatal collision occurred around 3:45 p.m. at Texas-114 and Alliance Boulevard in southeast Rhome, about 25 miles northwest of Fort Worth.

Police say that a pickup truck struck a sedan carrying the victim and his grandmother as the grandmother initiated a turn from the highway into their subdivision. A third vehicle then became involved in the crash.

Medics attempted to airlift 8-year-old Matteo Hernandez from the scene, but he succumbed to his injuries en route to a Fort Worth hospital.

Medics transported the grandmother to an area hospital with serious injuries.

Neither the driver of the pickup, nor the occupants of the third vehicle required hospitalization.

No charges have been announced thus far, as the investigation continues.
