Sheldon Gutierrez‑Rangel dies following Fed-Ex-train crash near Itasca
NEAR ITASCA, TX – Sheldon Gutierrez‑Rangel, who was one of two people left in critical condition after a FedEx train crash, has since died, CBS News reports.
This comes as an update in connection with our previous reporting. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Thursday near State Highway 81 and County Road 418.
The Texas Department of Public Safety determined that the driver of a FedEx Mercedes‑Benz Sprinter van, initially reported to be a truck, was traveling west on a private driveway when they were struck by a Union Pacific train.
The FedEx passenger, Gutierrez‑Rangel, a 25-year-old man from Dallas, and the FedEx driver were left in critical condition. Gutierrez‑Rangel went on to succumb to his injuries, while the driver remains in critical condition.
Covington Volunteer Fire Department assisted DPS with the crash scene. During that time, one of the volunteer firefighters suffered a heat-related emergency. Medical helicopter personnel airlifted the firefighter to a Fort Worth hospital.
The firefighter has since been released from the hospital and was last said to have been recovering at home.
DPS has not identified the FedEx driver and is actively working to determine the events that led to the crash.
