18-year-old Dallas man arrested after fatal crash in Garland
DALLAS, TX – The Garland Police Department reported that an 18-year-old Dallas man has been charged with murder after causing a deadly vehicular collision on Wednesday night.
According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, at about 10:25 p.m., Garland police attempted to pull over a white Nissan Altima for a traffic violation, but the driver refused to comply, prompting officers to initiate a brief car pursuit in the vicinity of West Walnut Street and North Garland Avenue.
Officers abandoned the chase and halted for the approaching an oncoming train. After the train passed, law enforcement lost sight of the suspect vehicle, which proceeded south on North Garland Avenue.
At the intersection of South Garland Avenue and West Avenue B, officers found that the driver of the Nissan ran a red light and collided with a passenger vehicle. Following the crash, five individuals were transported to local hospitals, with three of the wounded being passengers in the suspect vehicle and the other two passengers in the other involved car.
Police confirmed that a passenger in the suspect vehicle, identified as a 16-year-old male from Dallas, passed away at a hospital following the car collision.
Meanwhile, the driver of the suspect vehicle, 18-year-old Zayvion Smith, also of Dallas, has been taken into custody and charged with murder, according to officials. Additional charges against Smith are forthcoming, while his bond has not yet been established.
