Plane crash into Eagle Mountain Lake kills N Texas pilot

COLORADO CO., TX – A 60-year-old man from Richland Hills died earlier this month when his small plane crashed into a lake in southeastern Colorado County, reports NBC DFW 5.

The accident happened shortly before 1 p.m. on Monday, October 7th when the victim’s single-engine Champion 7EC aircraft landed in Eagle Mountain Lake. This is about 17 miles northwest of Fort Worth.

The pilot of the plane, whom authorities have identified as Stephen Lee Spence, drowned when the plane became submerged under the water. According to the autopsy, Spence also sustained blunt force injuries.

Authorities aren’t yet sure what caused the wreck. A preliminary investigation indicates that Spence’s plane was not sending the required Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast data when the accident occurred.

There were no other passengers on the plane at the time of the crash.

The investigation is ongoing. Our team will keep apprised of the story and post updates if we learn more about the circumstances of the accident.
