Semi crash caused by fatigued driver kills 4 McKellars, 1 other
KAUFMAN CO., TX – A multi-vehicle crash caused by a truck driver who fell asleep at the wheel killed four members of a family along with a Dallas woman.
According to KLTV 7, the chain-reaction crash occurred this past Saturday on the eastbound side of I-20 near Terrell and approximately 40 miles east of Dallas.
The investigation thus far suggests that 27-year-old Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni of Florida fell asleep while driving a 2025 Peterbilt 18-wheeler. The Peterbilt rear-ended a Ford F-150 carrying the McKellar family, pushing the pickup truck into a second semi. The first 18-wheeler then jackknifed into a Jeep in the adjacent lane, and the Jeep hit a Mustang. The second 18-wheeler mentioned above the hit a third semi-truck.
Four people from the Ford F-150 succumbed to their injuries at the scene of the accident. Authorities identified them as 79-year-old Billy McKellar, 52-year-old Zabar McKellar, 45-year-old Krishaun McKellar, and 16-year-old Kason McKellar.
The driver of the Jeep, identified as 49-year-old Nicole Gregory, died after being airlifted to an area hospital.
Medics transported a passenger from the Mustang to the hospital with non-critical injuries. The driver of the Mustang did not require hospitalization.
Authorities arrested Gonzalez-Companioni on five counts of manslaughter.
The investigation is ongoing.
