Areal Casanas IDed as victim in 3-vehicle crash near Kermit

WINKLER CO., TX – A three-vehicle collision involving an 18-wheeler killed one person and injured two others last Sunday morning in Winkler County.

According to First Alert 7, emergency teams responded to TX-115 near County Road 302 shortly before 6 a.m. This is just northeast of Kermit and around 45 miles west of Odessa.

Police say that a northbound Ford F-350 failed to slow down as the GMC Acadia ahead of it prepared to make a left turn. The pickup truck rear-ended the SUV, which left the roadway and ignited after landing in a ditch.

A southbound semi-truck then hit the Ford before overturning and catching fire.

The driver of the semi, identified as 48-year-old Areal Casanas, died at the scene.

Medics transported the other two drivers to area hospitals. The driver of the pickup sustained serious injuries, while the SUV driver’s injuries were non-critical.

A full investigation is underway.
