Head-on collision along Loop 289 near Indiana kills 1, hurts 2 others

LUBBOCK, TX – A wrong-way collision along the freeway killed one person and injured two others last Wednesday on the south side of Lubbock, reports the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

The accident happened after 2 a.m. on the eastbound side of Loop 289 between Indiana Avenue and Memphis Avenue. This is south of Kastman Park and Miller Elementary School.

Police say that for reasons that remain under investigation, a westbound vehicle entered the eastbound side of the freeway and collided head-on with an eastbound pickup truck carrying two people.

The driver of the pickup truck, identified as 38-year-old Leland Taylor, died at the scene from his injuries.

Medics transported the wrong-way driver, 42-year-old Ricardo Ferreyra, and a passenger from the pickup truck to an area hospital. Ferreyra sustained serious injuries in the collision, while the other victim was moderately injured.

Officials closed the freeway in the area of the crash while emergency teams assisted the victims, gathered evidence, and worked to clear the scene.

A full investigation is underway.
